Gertrude “Mary” Riley Jackson, affectionately known as “Gertie”, “GuhGuh”, “Mama” and “DeeDee”, was born on April 5, 1928 in Summerton, SC to the late Acie, Sr. and Alice Magwood Riley.
She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At a young age, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at Church of God by Faith in Summerton, SC, where she grew up.
On January 16, 1949, she married the late Jarrett Jackson. Upon marriage, she joined and attended Gum Spring Baptist Church in the Silver Community of Pinewood, SC. God blessed this union with one son, Levern.
Mrs. Gertie devoted her life to helping others. She was employed by Lowery Family of Summerton for many years as a domestic worker. She was very well known for her culinary skills and sewing abilities. She would bake a delicious treat for any and every one who would ask; and even if they didn’t ask, she would bake it and just call you to come by and pick it up. Her prayer was for God to continue to bless her so she could bless someone else. Her love for all will forever be remembered through the hundreds of quilts that she hand-sewn for all.
Mrs. Jackson departed this earthly life on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton, SC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Sean Jackson; a brother, Thomas Riley; and three sisters: Lillie Mae Manning, Mamie R. Black, and Hattie M. Servance.
Gertrude leaves to cherish her memory a son, Levern (Peggy) Jackson of Barstow, CA; a grandson, Tyrell (Grace) Jackson of Seattle, WA; two great-grandchildren, Zion Waters and Zachary Waters; one brother, Acie Riley, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; a niece she helped reared and loved as her own, Maxine R. Hampton of Summerton, SC; two brothers-in-law, John Jackson and Moses Jackson both of Summerton, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
