David Richardson Obituary

David’s Tour of Duty

“I am a Sailor home from the sea, no longer having to wonder where I be!”

David Lee Richardson began his journey on March 28, 1954 on the family farm outside of Summerton section of Clarendon County, SC to the late Rosalyn Richardson. He was reared by his grandparents, the late Bertie and Lila Mae Richardson.

“We only come this way once, don’t let it pass you by. Be a part of history – have an impact.”

David was an avid reader and a passionate hunter. He started his education at St. Paul Elementary School until his quest for knowledge became evident. He reunited with his mother and brother (the late Bobby P. Richardson) in New York. David attended Aviation High School in Queens, NY and graduated in 1972.

His love of aviation and adventure sent him embarking on a journey with a life of service for country, state, community and his fellow man. He enlisted in the United States Navy in April 1972. After a long and highly successful career as helicopter combat machinist mate. AD1 Richardson retired as honorable member from the US Navy August 1994.  After months of relaxing and his all-time favorite Hunting, he transitioned to his next career as a law enforcement officer. David retired after serving a combined 13 years for Summerton and Santee Police Department.

“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”

David was blessed with a wife of 45 years, Wonnetta and one daughter, Tamika. He was so proud to be a grandpa to Kaliyah Wonnetta.

Along with his wife, daughter and granddaughter, he leaves to cherish his memories, aunts Willean Jordan,  Amanda Richardson of Brooklyn, NY and Juanita (Aubrey) Buchanan of Portland, Jamaica W.I.; one great aunt Suester Richardson of Brooklyn, NY; sibling John Brailsford of Miami, FL; Sisters-in-law, Annetta Watson and Rosa Gibbons of Summerton, SC, Alfreda Curry of Orangeburg, SC;  Artrell Pugh and Odell Johnson of New York, NY, Barbara Watson of Miami, Fl, Judith McCray of Bronx, NY; Brothers-in-law, Robert (Gertrude) Watson of Brooklyn, NY, Elijah (Dorothy) Watson of Yonkers, NY, Eugene Watson of New York, NY and James (Romaine) Brailsford of Baltimore, MD ; a nephew reared as his own Terrance Watson of Summerton, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and  Community Hunting Club.
