Richard J.
Kozma
Oct 4, 1938 — Aug 31, 2026
Summerton, SC
Richard J. Kozma, 87, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of August 31, 2026, shortly after saying goodbye to his beloved wife of 64 years, Louise, and his daughters. He died following a short illness.
Richard was born in East Hartford, Connecticut, to Joseph and Julia Kozma and was a lifelong resident of Connecticut until moving to South Carolina in 2001. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Boston from 1960 to 1963.
After his naval service, Richard pursued his education with great dedication, earning multiple advanced degrees in engineering, organizational and industrial psychology, and related fields. He went on to enjoy a long career as an engineer with the Southern New England Telephone Company, retiring early in 1990.
Richard and Louise raised their three daughters in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, before moving to Summerton, South Carolina, where they made their home in 2001.
Richard was kind and loving, brave and determined, and unquestionably a force of nature to be reckoned with. He had a strong personality, a curious mind, and a way of making himself known wherever he went. He loved people, loved to stay busy, and was always ready with an opinion, a solution, or a good bit of humor. He was also someone who looked out for others, always willing to help a neighbor and making sure those around him were safe and cared for. His family and friends will remember his generous heart, independent spirit, sense of humor, and the unmistakable presence that made Richard, simply, Richard.
Richard enjoyed fishing, boating, golf, puttering, and fixing things. He especially enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with people and could often be found kibitzing from his golf cart.
Richard is survived by his wife, Louise, and their three daughters and sons-in-law: Karen Saules and her husband, Peter Saules, of West Bloomfield, Michigan; Alison Young and her husband, Anthony Young, of Eastham, Massachusetts, and their daughter, Toni Young; and Joelle Wheeler and her son, Reese Wheeler, of Morristown, Vermont.
He is also survived by his sister, Catherine (Cathy) Sawka and her husband, Alex, of South Windsor, Connecticut, and their family: Julie Cunningham and her husband, Michael, and their son, Michael (Mikey); Sherri Rozek and her husband, Mark; and Joseph (Joey) Sawka. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Alex Sawka Jr., who is survived by his daughter, Dreya.
There will be no formal funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
Richard will be deeply missed by his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, granddaughter, grandson, sister, extended family, neighbors, and friends. His presence, his caring nature, and his larger-than-life personality will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
