Obituary

"Peacefully sleeping, resting at last, His weary trials and troubles past, In silence he suffered, in patience he bore, till God called him home to suffer no more. "

Mr. Leon Jones, son of the late Russell and Lucretia Green Jones Sr. departed this earthly life on Friday, April 26, 2024 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, SC. Leon was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 15, 1945. He was raised in the home of his grandparents John and Silla King in Summerton, SC. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Scott's Branch High School in 1965.

Leon worked for many years at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. He was also a skilled mechanic and loved working on cars. Another joy of Leon's was cooking delicious meals for his loved ones. Leon lived in New York for 56 years and while there he attended Zion Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. He moved back home to Summerton in 2021. That same year, Leon joined Historic Liberty Hill A.M.E Church and was an active member until his health began to decline.

Leon was united in holy matrimony to the late Rita McDonald Jones on September 3, 1966. They were blessed with 32 years of marriage before Rita's passing. From this union, two children were born: Dwight and Kesha Jones. Leon was also preceded in death by three brothers: Russell Jr., Harold and Bennie Jones.

He leaves to cherish his memories, one son, Dwight Jones, Summerton, SC; one daughter, Kesha Jones, Brooklyn, NY; one grandson, Quincy (Tiffany) Montgomery, Charlotte, NC; one granddaughter, Chada-Lee Proctor, Brooklyn, NY; one great-granddaughter, Kwincy Montgomery, Sumter, SC; one sister, Rosa (Caesar) Aparicio, Brooklyn, NY; one aunt, Binkie Thomas, Brooklyn, NY; two sisters-in-law, Debra (Howard) Caldwell, Columbia, SC, and Berdina (Harold) Bennett, Waxhaw, NC; two brothers-in-law, Leonard (Renee) McDonald, Abingdon, MD, and Lloyd (Audrey) McDonald, Matthews, NC; two god-daughters, Deana Caldwell, Columbia, SC, and Najah McDonald, Abingdon, MD and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
