William Cantey Obituary

William Lee Cantey (affectionately known as Bunk), the son of the late Mary Daisy Merchant and George Cantey was born on November 6, 1946 in Summerton South Carolina.  He was reared in the home of his maternal grandparents, the late Lucinda and Sanko Merchant along with his “sister” Lila M. (Trudy) Solomon and a special cousin Annie Faye Stukes.  He moved to Florida with his parents for a short period of time, but returned to live with his aunt Lucinda Dubose.

He was married in 1966 to Annie Mae Manning.  They had three children Dianne, William Jr. and Mary Daisy.  He had fourth child, Sylvia from another union.

He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County.  During his early twenties he lost his vision secondary to glaucoma.  He later completed his education at The School For The Blind in South Carolina.

William was reared as a Christian and was baptized at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton, South Carolina.  He later joined St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in the Silver Community of Pinewood South Carolina.  He was very active in the church on the Male and Adult Choirs.  He had a special relationship with his Pastor, Reverend Willie J. Chandler. He was well liked by all of the members of the church.  He was always energetic and had a great sense of humor.

He departed this earthly life on April 20, 1946 at the age of 72 at McLeod Health Clarendon in Manning, South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his infant son William Lee Cantey, Jr. and two brothers Alex Dubose and Abbie Baxter.

Mr. Cantey (Bunk) leaves to cherish his wonderful memories,  three daughters; Dianne (Sean) Cantey-McCaulla, Dr. Mary Daisy (Winfield) Cantey-Thomas and Sylvia (Cesar) Canty- Roman, five grand-children; Antoinette Canty, Trenee McCaulla, Tianna McCaulla, Amari McCaulla and Winfield Thomas III; three great grandchildren, Laquan Valentine, London Williams and Curtis Davis; one sister, Lila M. Solomon; six brothers, Thomas (Slyvia) Dubose, Edward Dubose, Kirby (Linda) Dubose, Norris Dubose and Kenny (Juanita) Dubose; one sister in law; Shirley M. McFadden-Dubose; a special cousin like a sister, Annie Faye Stukes; one special niece, Tasha Dubose and a devoted cousin who served as his assistant Jacqueline Smite along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 1020 Louise Street, Summerton, South Carolina 29148 and the home of his daughters, 5 Second Street, Summerton, South Carolina 29148.
