Mary Mitchell Obituary

Mary B. Mitchell, daughter of the late Mary Jackson Sessions and Adam Gilyard was born on June 17, 1931 in Summerton, South Carolina where she was raised by her mother and grandparents.

She received her formal education in the Public Schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton, SC.

Being reared in a Christian home, at an early age she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of St. Mark A. M. E. Church where she served in many capacities including serving as a Trustee, Deaconess and Stewardess.

Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Robert Thomas Mitchell, Sr. During this union, she was blessed with three children.

She was a member of the YMWCA Lodge District #3, Eastern Star Lodge 304 and the Women’s Missionary Society of both Summerton and Manning. She was President of the Gospel Crusades of Summerton and worked tiredly with Voter’s Registration.

Mrs. Mitchell served in Clarendon School District One for over 30 years.

On Friday, November 1, 2019, Mary entered into eternal rest at Prisma Health Richland in Columbia, SC. She is preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Sessions and two grandchildren, Yvonne Stokes and Harold J. Michell, Sr. 

Loving memories will be cherished by a son, Robert Thomas Mitchell, Jr.; two daughters, Earnestine (Rufus) Ragin of Columbia, SC and Marie (Moses) Oliver of Thomasville, NC; two sisters, Pauline Georgie of Columbia, SC and Dr. Carolyn G. (Hawley) Robinson of Summerton, SC; a brother, Jerry (Mary) Gilyard of Pinewood, SC; seven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A very special spiritual daughter, Sandra Brown.

The family will receive friends at the home, 28 Parson Street, Summerton, SC.
